How do I test ignition control module on my 1995 F150?

My truck has been having trouble starting lately. Finally, I get it going, but yesterday driving down the road at 30mph it cut off, coasted about 50 ft and then started right back up on its own. It is not a fuel problem. My husband thinks it is the ignition control module, but how do we test this?
Thanks for your help

The correct term for the part is Thick Film Ignition Module (aka TFI module). This part works in conjunction with the pick-up module inside the distributor. Either part will give the same symptoms of failure if only one of the two is failing. It is more common for the TFI to fail by itself from heat. Problem with testing the TFI is that by the time you remove it from the engine compartment it will have already cooled down and when you test it the module will pass. In order to replace the pick-up inside the distributor the distributor itself must be pulled and completely disassembled in order to get to it. It's enough to make an at-home mechanic just go to the parts store and get a remanufactured distributor since it will already have a new pick-up inside.

The TFI can be removed using a quarter inch drive ratchet with a 7/32 thin-wall socket. Parts stores even sell a TFI tool which is basically a thin-wall socket with a knob-shaped handle on it.

It requires a special tool. They sel them at almost all parts stores for a few dollars.

If you remove the control module and take to o'reilly auto parts or a auto parts in your area they will have a machine that will test the module for you..I had to have mine checked and it was bad so replaced..

there is not much you can do test the ignition module itself

if it's original, and you have over 100K miles on your truck, you should replace both items (about $68. for both) @ autozone.com

Best advice is take it for a diagnostic check - You could have been on a freeway when it cut out! It's not safe to drive with this type of fault.

Hope this helps
