on the older pintos there is a egr below the carburator, or in your case EFI.

and this egr would cause a major vacuum leak. you can feel it if you put

your finger under intake manifold. maybe this will help.

Don't know how you can have a '92 Ford Pinto. They were only built from 1971 up till 1980. Then they became the Ford Mustang 2 for a short while. None of the Pinto engines had Electronic Fuel Injection either. All were built in a time before "Throttle Body" injection came out to the general public yet. Ford discontinued the 2.0L engine back in 1974. All engines for these cars had one or two barrel carbs on them, never EFI.



Then you should have mentioned the car being a "European" model. None of those cars are sold here in America.



But my guess would be the cam/crank gear jumped time. Replace the timing belt and reset the gears to the proper placement.
