what is it in? is it a ford, chevy, chrysler? chances are it jumped time. if it's a belt, you need to know if it's a non-interference motor or not. if it is, then you'll be in good shape. if not, you probably bent some valves. you need to check with your mechanic.

How did the timing get off? The best way is with a timing light. Check with a book like Chiltons they will explain in great detail how to do it, and what to look for.
