Electric cars were quite popular during the Edwardian era (c.1901-14), as they were quieter and more reliable than internal-combustion cars at the time. They tended to be larger town carriages, and were mainly used over short distances in urban environments that were well suited to pedestrian movement. When internal-combustion cars became more reliable, their much longer range caused the popularity of the slow, heavy electrics to dwindle.

So you see, electric cars aren't "futuristic", but rather old-fashioned. Nevertheless, small numbers of electric cars continued to be made all along, up to the present day. Their problem remains that they work well only where they aren't really needed, i.e. in well-designed, pedestrian-friendly cities.
