hi there, for lonh now ive been thinking about changing the engine in my car at the moment i have a 1.6 ford escort finesse... its got nothing done to it apart from an air filter...
now what i would like to as is if anyone knows around how much it would cost for a mecanic to do it, and wich engine would be apropriable for the chassi of the car, i was thinking about the mabe vti engine with 160 bhp but would that be too much for the car?> what other problems migh i have in the long term??? or even the crx vtec engine from the 1.6 delsol wich has 130 bhp.. if u could gimme some ideas and tell me what u think.. it would be much apreciated :)

I doubt a mechanic would do it. Doing a motor swap for a RWD car is one thing because the suspension can totally stay in tact and all that is really needed is motor mounts, some sort of EMS (unless you are carbing it), and a custom drive shaft. But a FWD car, you would have to take the transmission from the swap. I know/work with a lot of mechanics and I would bet none of them would even think about taking the job.

Here is a rough list of steps, and the problems you'd encounter:

1) Motor size/mounting points. You would have to fab up at least 2 mounting point for the engine to the subframe. That would be considerable welding on the subframe.

2) Transmission. If the transmission even fit (I know on a civic, the D motor has about an inch on the left and right, about 3 inches up front and about 5-6 inches in the back. You would need mounts, clutch linkage (hondas use hydrolic, not sure about fwd ford, i know mustangs were cable links), a honda shifter linkage (hondas use the 1 pole style, i think old escorts are 2 rod style).

3) Exhaust manifold, honda's exit out the front of the motor, not sure about fords, but either way you would need a custom set of pipes welded up

4) Axles, you would need custom axles made that would have a honda cv at one end but the reciever for a ford spindle at the other end, also the length would need to be exact.

5) Computer, you would need either a standalone or a OBD-0/1 honda computer hacked to even crank the motor, most gauges on the dash would probably not work right

You are looking at 4-5000 in parts plus 60-80 hours of work.

feasible? definite sensible? No you may could substitute each thing over, engine/transmission/computer/sensors/etc... I think of there will be *substantial* quantities of fabrication in touch besides. you will spend extra desirable than Escort is well worth 5 or 6 cases over honestly. it would be extra low priced to easily purchase a sparkling engine for the Escort and heat it over with aftermarket stuff.

With what you will spend to try and swap motors out of a Honda (you have to buy the engine,if it will fit,any adapters or converters, and pay someone do fabricate any thing you can't buy and pay someone to do the installation) you could buy a 1.6 Turbo

or Sell the Ford and buy a Honda

get a different car. any escort after mk2 is horrible anyway. a ford engine would probably be easier.
