Unfortunately the Ford dealer no longer has key codes available for vehicles over 10 model years old. Try to locate your key code in your glove box on the owners manual or on the original bill of sale. This is why it is so important for Ford owners to make sure they have their key codes written down in their glove box.
If you can't find the key code, you will need to call a local automotive locksmith and have him come out to the 2001 Ford Escort and make a key for you. He will charge around $150 to do this.
Amazingkeys.com is a great place to find extra keys for your vehicles and you might think about ordering some extra keys from them so this will not happen to you again in the future.

First, you will need 2 things. Proof that you own the car and proof who you are. Your vehicle registration papers prove you own the car. For a picture ID your driver's license works best.
Go to your local Ford dealer and ask for the parts department. Using the VIN information on the registration papers the dealer can cut you a new key. This will ne a new key, not a duplicate.
As you can see, it is not a good idea to only have 1 set of keys to your car. The nw dealer key will be more expensive than a duplicate. If your key does not have any sort of chip embedded you can go to a place like Wal-Mart or any auto supply store and have at least 1 duplicate set made. Keep your spare set of keys in a safe place where you can find them if needed. If you lose your key you can have a new set made.

A local locksmith can code the key for you, however, I'm afraid its a trip to the Ford dealer for a new immobiliser chip.

A Locksmith can make you another one, or two at least...
