Well, I believe the biggest engine ever to be offered from the factory by a car manufacturer (aside from exotics) was the Cadillac 500cid engine. I'm not sure the liter listing of the 500 cid. I imagine is was 8.something.
As far as the Mustang, if you want to stick the biggest Ford gasoline engine in it...it would be the 460 V8. You can stroke it and bore it as well to get some more displacement out of it too. I think Ford made larger engines but they were diesel fuel powered. I believe the 460 is listed as a 7.5L engine.

Biggest engine? Probably the Veyron's at 16.4 liters. I may stand corrected though. Which translates to 1,000 cubic inch.
As far as what you can fit into a Mustang....Anywhere north of 600 cubic inches, if you wanted.

Nor for a mustang, but I saw a photo of a 12-cylinder diesel being installed in a japanese ship. Each cylinder was 8 feet across. it developed 22,000 horsepower. The engine for the 777 jet develops 45,000 horsepower.

If you install anything bigger than the 351 ford engine in a mustang you'll have very little room to work in, anything larger than that you'll have to pull the engine out to change spark plugs. I had a 452 6.6L in my Pontiac Trens-Am that is the largest i have seen in a car, but ther might be larger engines in trucks.
